Mt Washington Observatory Trip - Dec 2008
Lucky for us this Observatory overnight trip was timed perfectly. A one day weather window on Saturday allowed a group of 11 NH climbers the right conditions for climbing to the summit via the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail. During our ascent we traveled through deep snow in very cold conditions. Above tree line on the summit cone we were treated to a spectacular sunset! We all enjoyed the summit accomodations and the hospitality from each of the summit staff. The following morning we left early to descend before the approaching storm. We arrived back at our cars just as the storm intensified. A perfect two day trip on NH highest peak.
The gentle start the first mile from the cog base area.
Our first stop at Gem pool, the route climbs steeply from here.
Working hard to gain elevation, 500 feet to tree line.
Rebecca and Alan just below the summit.
A heavy coating of rime ice encased the summit buildings and towers.
The New Hampshire team just below the summit.
Alpenglow at its finest.
The highest point in the northeast - the tower.
Cards and stories enjoyed by all.
Plenty of food and drink for all - many thanks to Ryan.
A lesson in the weather room.
Ryan cooking a huge breakfast.
Jim and Michelle ready for the morning descent.
Mike checking the water content from the previous evening.
Daybreak in the tower

High winds and snow above Lake of the Clouds Hut.
A great two day adventure must come to an end. |
